Why we need your support

Who is Breast Cancer Care?

Breast Cancer Care is here for anyone affected by breast cancer. We bring people together, provide information and support, and campaign for improved standards of care. We use our understanding of people’s experience of breast cancer and our clinical expertise in everything we do.

  • Our helpline, website and local events ensure people affected by breastcancer have access to the latest, accurate information. We’re also there tohelp with the practical impact of a diagnosis, supporting people copingwith the side effects of treatment and offering advice to women coming toterms with a changed body image.
  • Through as many of our services as possible, we make sure people with breast cancer have the chance to share their experiences with each other so they can gain the strength and support that comes from talking to someone else who’s been there. Our website hosts the largest onlinebreast cancer community in the UK and our 1-2-1 support volunteers provide skilled emotional support over the phone.
  • We also promote the importance of early detection of breast cancer. We believe that up-to-dateinformation, based on the latest medical evidence, builds confidence and helps people take control oftheir health. Our training, workshops and resources explain how to be breast aware and what changes to look and feel for.

  • Around 80% of breast cancer cases occur in women over the age of 50
  • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women under 35
  • Almost 1,400 women aged 35 --- 39 are diagnosed annually
  • Approximately 12,000 people die from breast cancer in the UK every year
  • Breast cancer is the second biggest cause of death for women in the UK after lung cancer.

How does Breast Cancer Care exist?

Breast Cancer Care relies on donations from the public to provide its services free to people affected by breastcancer. Below are examples showing what your money could do:

  • £5 pays for someone to learn about breast awareness at a community based workshop delivered by our expert team. Sorting myths from reality the session covers signs, symptoms and risks and encourages everyone to become breast aware in a way that suits them
  • £23 pays for a call to our helpline for up to date information on any aspect of diagnosis and treatment as well as confidential and sensitive support on the personal impact of the disease. Taking as much time as a caller needs, conversations can last over an hour
  • £132 pays to connect someone going through breast cancer with a trained volunteer who has had a similar experience to them. Up to six sessions are offered, either face to face or by phone, providing the reassurance and encouragement of talking to someone who has been there.
