Trek Peru Itinerary
4 - 13 September 2009
Day 1
Fly from London Heathrow to Lima before catching another flight to Cusco.
Day 2
Spend the day in Cusco exploring this beautiful city or simply relax and adjust to the change in altitude in one of the many cafes on the Plaza de Armas.
Day 3
Start the day in Tambo Machay an ancient ruin high in the hills above Cusco. We will walk to Sacsayhuaman, an impressive Incan ruin on the outskirts of Cusco. We stay a second night in Cusco.
Day 4
After an early start and a transfer through the Sacred Valley, we eventually arrive in Totora from where we begin our challenge. The scenery will impress you as we walk along old Inca trails to our lunch spot (4100m), before descending to Quisuarani (3800) where we will walk into camp.
Day 5
On this our longest walking day, we climb high into the mountains along good paths and tracks. After a couple of hours we reach Lago Qeunacocha and soon we will have climbed the final 250m to the Huchayccassa pass (4400m), and a stunning view of turquoise lakes and white peaks. After a lakeside lunch, we continue on our way pass local villages and schools at Cuncani to our campsite at the small settlement of Huacahuasi (3840m).
Day 6
After a hearty breakfast we leave the village behind. This will be another long walk, and it starts with us following a track taking us past small lakes, climbing up to the Ipsayccassa Pass (4490m). Looking out into the mountains, we will get our first clear view of Mount Veronica standing at 5682m. After stealing a moment to take in the view, we descend to Ipsaycocha Lake where we stop for lunch, before continuing our descent through several small settlements to Rumira (3900m), our camp for the night.
Day 7
Our final day of trekking starts with a short transfer down the Patacancancha valley to the Inca village of Ollantaytambo. From here we board the 9.05am train taking us to KM 104 where we join the Inca Trail and begin our final ascent. The path is steep, but as we reach the Sun Gate and get our first glimpses of Machu Picchu, it will be worth the climb! It is a short journey from here into the town of Aguas Calientes and our hotel. There will be time to take relax and unwind before we celebrate our achievements with a gala dinner.
Day 8
Spend the morning at Machu Picchu or wander around this bustling town. We will take an afternoon train from Aguas Calientes back to Ollantaytambo before travelling back to Cusco by bus and onto our hotel. The rest of the afternoon and evening is yours to shop, have dinner and soak up the atmosphere before heading home tomorrow.
Day 9
Morning flight back to Lima, before flying home to the UK.
Day 10
Arrive back in the UK.
