Carol Service 2008

Carols Banner

Thursday 4 December 2008, London

Join us for this year’s Breast Cancer Care Carol Service by Candlelight at the magical St Paul’s Church, Knightsbridge. This special evening of festive music, celebrity readings and song is a highlight in the festive calendar.

Last year’s Carol Service and Champagne Supper, supported by Arbuthnot Latham Private Bankers, has already been described as ‘one of the best’ and its popularity shows in the fantastic final total of £56,048 raised for Breast Cancer Care.

The 2007 carol service

Guests queued around the block to attend this wonderfully seasonal event and while the choirs and our celebrity readers were inside the church rehearsing, there was a hive of activity outside with guests winning some fabulous prizes in our Lucky Dip; buying last minute Christmas gifts from our selection of merchandise and keeping warm with our ever popular hot roasted chestnuts.

Once inside, everyone’s candles were lit creating a magical atmosphere for the L’Inviti Singers to open the service with a beautiful rendition of Silent Night. Our patron, Cherie Booth QC then welcomed guests and thanked everyone for their support of Breast Cancer Care and the service which led nicely to our first speaker, Nigel Harman who treated us to a Christmassy excerpt from Cider With Rosie. The Westminster Under School Junior Choir kept guests smiling with two songs under instruction from their conductor Jeremy Walker.

Lesley Joseph then stepped up to the pulpit with a fantastic reading of The Twelve Days of Christmas, which had the congregation in stitches. Then after more carols, Sue Allen, a volunteer peer supporter with Breast Cancer Care, shared a moving reflection about her experience of breast cancer.

A highlight of the evening followed with classical music star Alfie Boe leading the L’Inviti Singers in a beautiful performance of O Holy Night. Our final celebrity reader, Trinny Woodall, treated us to Twas the Night Before Christmas and the service ended with the whole congregation singing O Come All Ye Faithful.

Guests soon filled the church courtyard to enjoy wine and mince pies and reflected on the beautiful service and the gorgeous leaving gift donated by Swarovski. Meanwhile some 120 guests followed a lantern trail to the Champagne Supper at the Caledonian Club to extend the festivities. Lesley Joseph continued to entertain by hosting the supper and drawing the raffle with exciting prizes ranging from a Quintessentially wine tasting package to a year’s membership at the London Capital Club. The momentum was sustained with our auctionette of two exclusive experiences including a year’s membership with concierge service; Quintessentially and a two week Personal Chef Programme kindly donated by The Pure Package. To round off the evening guests were entertained and even joined in with our intimate quartet performing some well known festive carols.
