Trek South Africa FAQs
How fit do I need to be?
This trek suits people with a good level of fitness. We will be trekking in a challenging environment for six to nine hours a day, for six days in the South African countryside.
To achieve the recommended level of fitness, we advise you start training as soon as you sign up. When you register we will send you a training guide to help get you started. The fitter you are, the more confident you will be and the more you will enjoy each day. Our treks are not a race; everyone is encouraged to go at their own pace and the level of fitness will naturally vary throughout the group. While we endeavour to ensure that everyone finishes each day’s trekking together as a group, this is dependent on the pace of the slowest person.
What will the trekking be like?
The trek will take us over terrain that varies from day to day and from morning to afternoon. We will visit a beautiful part of South Africa and one that many visitors will never get to see. We will witness some breathtaking views on this journey through the remote, lush countryside.
Our route will take us into the nature reserves and national parks of South Africa, taking us up, over and down hills, along narrow tracks, through forest and out to the coast. At times the ground will be loose underfoot. Hard climbs will always be worthwhile - when we reach the top, sensational vistas will open up before our eyes. No two days will be the same and we will need to be prepared for differing conditions underfoot.
What happens to my belongings when I am trekking?
Our main luggage will be transported for us each day. All you will need to carry is a small day pack with your essentials, for example, water, sun screen, sun hat, energy snacks, camera, fleece, waterproof etc.
What will the weather be like when we go?
We expect the weather to be warm during the day with temperatures ranging from 18 - 26°C, with the possibility of some rain. In the evenings it should feel a little cooler, with the temperature dipping to as low as 13°C, so we will need to have some warm clothes to put on. We must be prepared though for all eventualities, so do pack wet weather gear.
Where do we stay?
We will stay in hotels before and after the trek. Two nights on the trek will be spent in dormitories/tents and the remaining nights on the challenge will be spent in hotels and chalets. All the rooms have en-suite facilities and will be shared (usually twin or triple-bedded) single sex rooms. Camping will be in two-person tents with showering and toilet facilities.
If there is someone in particular you would like to share with, please let us know on your registration form.
