Trek China along the Great Wall - Itinerary
15 – 24 October 2010
This breathtaking trek will take us through the beautiful countryside surrounding the Great Wall of China, as well as along the Wall itself. Taking in watchtowers, Wuzoulou Mountain, farmlands, valleys and simple country villages this is a charity challenge to remember!
Day 1
Fly from London Heathrow to Beijing.
Day 2
Transfer from Beijing to Simatai Lodge close to the Great Wall and the start of our trek.
Day 3
Our first day of walking and our first day on the Great Wall. We start our walk at Jinshanling where we travel through a remote village before reaching and taking our first few steps on the wall. We journey along the it as we continue on our way to Gubeiko before transferring back to Simatai Lodge.
Day 4
From Jinshanling we pass 32 watchtowers on our way back to Simatai. We will see spectacular scenery as we follow the path of the undulating wall. Some paths have uneven steps and loose stones so we must walk carefully. As we return to Simatai Lodge for our final night, there is an optional zip wire landing for daredevils over Simatai Valley.
Day 5
Today we trek the steep east section of the Great Wall from Simatai. We are mostly walking uphill and the views as we walk from watchtower to watchtower get even more dramatic. Our route descends into the countryside for a few hours in the afternoon, taking us through stunning valleys, and passing local farms as we head into Gangfang Village. From here we walk back to Simatai before transferring to Wuzoulou Lodge.
Day 6
A wonderful day’s trekking awaits as we start our walk up to the summit of Wuzoulou Mountain. In the morning we will be walking through forest and shrubbery, and once we reach the summit and our highest point on the trek at 1,100m, we will eat our lunch at one of the most beautiful spots on this challenge. As we journey down the mountain and back to our lodge we will be treated to spectacular views of nearby gorges, and reservoirs.
Day 7
Today we trek through Black Dragon Pool Park. The first part of the morning sees us walking on a path which turns gradually from flat to rocky, before we begin a short uphill climb into the tree covered hills. After lunch we descend into the valley and walk past lakes and gorges as we travel through the park and to our transfer back to Mountain Bar Lodge.
Day 8
Our final day of trekking is along the Great Wall at Mutianyu where we trek to the furthermost accessible point. Here, the wall has been renovated to resemble its original grandeur. This is a challenging part of the trek ending with steps up a steep incline. The effort is well worth it as the views are stunning and you should be able to see the wall for miles – a perfect place to end the challenge. We transfer to Beijing after lunch and to our hotel.
Day 9
Today is a free day to relax or take an optional excursion around Beijing before celebrating our achievements at our gala dinner.
Day 10
We depart Beijing in the afternoon and arrive back into London Heathrow later that day.
